A welcoming community hub at the heart of Ravenswood

Starting Point Neighbourhood House — often simply called Starting Point — is a trusted place where people from across Ravenswood, Waverley, St Leonards, and the greater Launceston area come together to connect, learn, support each other, and grow. Open Monday to Thursday (9 am–3 pm) and Friday (9 am–12 pm), the House has been a cornerstone of community life for decades, evolving with local needs and strengthening neighbourhood connection.

Dose of Fresh Vegetables Daily
23 Jan 2026 Community & Social Wellbeing Food Security & Nutrition WellbeingInclusionSustainability

Dose of Fresh Vegetables from the Community Garden:

More Than Just Affordable Produce In times of rising living costs, access to affordable, nutritious food is a pressing concern for many households. The community garden, through Starting Point Neighbourhood House, offers a simple yet impactful solution through its “Dose of Fresh Vegetables” initiative. For a gold coin donation or even free of charge, individuals and families can receive fresh vegetables grown locally. This initiative is especially valuable for those experiencing cost of living pressures, providing an accessible source of healthy food without straining budgets.

Beyond affordability, the benefits of the Dose of Fresh Vegetables extend further. Freshly harvested vegetables retain more nutrients compared to store-bought produce that may have traveled long distances. This means recipients gain access to higher-quality, nutrient-rich food that supports better health and wellbeing. The community garden also fosters a sense of connection and support. By participating in this program, individuals become part of a local network focused on sustainability and mutual aid. This can reduce feelings of isolation and encourage community engagement, which is important for mental health.

Additionally, the initiative promotes environmental sustainability. Growing vegetables locally reduces the carbon footprint associated with food transport and packaging. It also encourages awareness of seasonal eating and the value of fresh, homegrown produce. In summary, the Dose of Fresh Vegetables program offers more than just affordable food.

It contributes to improved nutrition, community cohesion, and environmental responsibility. For those facing financial challenges, it provides a practical and holistic resource to help manage the pressures of daily living.
