On Country Playgroup Hosts Weekly Healthy Cooking Classes for Families

Healthy Cooking for Local Families

Starting Point Neighbourhood House introduced a new On Country Playgroup Term 2 cooking class series for local community members and families in Launceston, Tasmania. The program consisted of weekly classes held every Wednesday throughout the school term. Each session was designed around preparing fun, healthy recipes, creating a relaxed and practical cooking environment accessible to all ages.

Welcoming All Community Members

Attendance at these classes was by RSVP, with limited spots available to maintain an intimate and supportive atmosphere. Starting Point Neighbourhood House facilitated the sessions, making sure everyone, from young children to their caregivers, could participate comfortably. The weekly arrangement allowed for regular engagement, giving families a routine activity to look forward to while also introducing practical skills for daily life.

Community Impact and Engagement

The primary group to benefit was families connected with the On Country Playgroup and surrounding community members interested in learning more about healthy eating. Some participants were attending community cooking classes for the first time, gaining not only recipe ideas but also confidence in their ability to prepare varied dishes at home. The inclusive nature of the event meant that newcomers to Launceston also had an opportunity to meet others in a relaxed, communal space.

Over the term, the cooking classes by Starting Point Neighbourhood House helped foster social connections and provided families with new ways to approach healthy, simple meals. While the scale of impact was local and the group size intentionally small, the contribution made practical skills and new experiences available to families who may not otherwise have easy access to structured kitchen activities. The recurring sessions helped ensure these benefits extended beyond a single encounter, encouraging regular attendance and gradual learning. By providing an inviting place for cooking and connection, Starting Point Neighbourhood House played a practical role in enriching everyday family life in Launceston.
