Building Confidence Through Skills and Support
Starting Point Neighbourhood House has launched a free 12-week initiative in Launceston, Tasmania, offering local community members and families the chance to combine practical skills development with personal wellbeing support. From March through May, the program is hosted at the Rocherlea Men’s Shed, where participants receive motorcycle licence training alongside health and wellbeing sessions. This dual focus is designed to build both confidence and capacity among attendees, addressing not only the practical requirements for licensing but also the broader needs associated with personal development and resilience.
Partnerships for Greater Reach
The program is a collaborative effort involving the Cape Hope Foundation and Northern Suburbs Community Centre, adding depth to the resources and expertise available. The partnership structure ensures that the training is accessible and well-supported, catering for a broad spectrum of community participants in Launceston. Through the efforts of Starting Point Neighbourhood House, families and individuals who may not otherwise have access to such training are able to take part free of charge. All sessions are coordinated locally, underlining the community-based nature of the support provided.
On-the-ground Benefits
By combining motorcycle licence training with wellbeing support, the program aims to offer practical benefits for participants, such as increased employability or enhanced independence, particularly in suburban and regional areas where transport can be a barrier. At the same time, attention to health and personal wellbeing provides a holistic approach, recognising challenges faced by community members and addressing them in a safe, supportive environment. While the scale of the program is modest, the impact for those involved can be significant on a personal level, fostering a sense of achievement and community connection. Starting Point Neighbourhood House continues to play a hands-on role, coordinating the program and working with partners to meet the real needs of residents in Launceston.
