Free Hepatitis C Testing Clinic Offered at Ravenswood Centre

Starting Point Neighbourhood House supported a health initiative aimed at making hepatitis C testing more accessible to the local community. On the 30th of January and again on the 4th of February 2025, community members in Launceston, Tasmania, were able to access a free, confidential hepatitis C testing clinic. The clinic was held at the Ravenswood Community Health Centre and operated as a drop-in service from 9am to 3pm on both days. No appointments were required, allowing families and individuals to participate at their convenience.

Collaboration and Benefits for Participants

This contribution was made possible through the involvement of TUHSL (Tasmanian Users Health and Support League) and the Tasmanian Health Service, who managed and facilitated the clinic. For each person who completed a test, a $20 voucher was provided as a practical incentive. The clinic focused on creating a safe and accessible setting where those who might otherwise hesitate to seek testing could do so without barriers.

The primary beneficiaries were local residents, including families and individuals who may not have had easy access to health services. Confidentiality and ease of access were prioritised, helping to address concerns that can sometimes prevent people from seeking testing. For many in the Ravenswood and broader Launceston area, the clinic reduced obstacles related to cost, stigma, and transport. The onsite availability of vouchers also made a small but meaningful contribution to participants, potentially assisting with groceries or other needs.

Impact on the Community

While the impact was local and limited in scale to the two clinic dates, the presence of the hepatitis C testing service made a difference for participants in Launceston. Offering free and confidential testing can help with early detection and improve health outcomes. Starting Point Neighbourhood House’s involvement connected community members with valuable health resources. Through supporting this partnership, the organisation contributed to broader public health efforts in Tasmania, even if just for a short period and among a limited group of people. The clinic’s approachable format encouraged community engagement and made it easier for residents to take proactive steps around their health.
