Our Community Presence

A Story of Family, Perseverance, and Community

Our Family’s Journey

I’m originally from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I first came to Australia to study my Master’s degree at the Australian Maritime College (AMC). During that time, I fell in love with this beautiful island — the peaceful environment, the friendly people, and the slower pace of life. It felt like a wonderful place to raise a family, so I decided to bring my family here and make Tasmania our new home.

Settling in Launceston

Coming from Ho Chi Minh City — it’s a city as busy and lively as Melbourne or Sydney — I was initially shocked by how quiet Launceston was. By 5 p.m., everything seemed to close! But over time, I came to appreciate that quietness. It means more time for family, more connection with neighbours, and more balance in life. That’s what I love most about living here.

How Norwood Takeaway Began

During my studies at AMC, I worked part-time at Norwood Café & Takeaway for about two years. When the previous owners decided to move back to Melbourne, they offered me the chance to take over the business. I didn’t hesitate. By then, I had already grown close to this community — the customers, the families, and the familiar faces who always greeted me with warmth. It felt like the right place to build something lasting.

Early Challenges and Turning Points

I took over the business just before COVID-19 hit. I’ll never forget the first day of lockdown — in three hours, I sold only one cup of coffee. It was a frightening moment, but we refused to give up.

At that time, most of our food was frozen, and it wasn’t drawing customers back. So we decided to completely transform the menu. We started serving freshly cooked seafood — favourites like gummy flake and blue grenadier — and introduced healthier, homemade options like bánh mì and rice paper rolls.

The change worked. People loved the freshness, the quality, and the friendly service. Slowly, our little takeaway became a local favourite — a spot where people could stop for a hot meal, a chat, or a quick lunch that felt homemade.

A Community Connection

Over time, Norwood Takeaway became more than just a food business — it became part of the heartbeat of the neighbourhood. Our customers are not just people who buy food; they’re friends who share their stories, their laughter, and their support. Many have watched our family grow, and we’ve watched their children grow too.

When locals tell us that our food reminds them of home — or that they come here because they feel welcome — it’s the greatest reward.

A True Migrant Success Story

For our family, Norwood Takeaway is more than a livelihood — it’s a symbol of what’s possible when opportunity meets hard work and community spirit. From arriving in a new country with big dreams, to now running a thriving local business, our journey has been filled with challenges, growth, and gratitude.

We are proud to call Launceston home, and even prouder to be part of such a caring, supportive community. Every meal we serve is a thank you to the people who helped us make this dream a reality.

For the team at Norwood Takeaway, community connection goes far beyond serving great food — it’s about being part of everyday local life.

From the moment they took over the shop, this family-run business has become a friendly hub for the Norwood and greater Launceston community. Along with fresh seafood, handmade bánh mì, and smiling service, Norwood Takeaway proudly supports local events and fundraisers — often becoming the go-to spot for neighbours to buy tickets to community raffles, school fundraisers, and local sports club events.

For many small community groups, every raffle ticket or event pass sold helps raise funds for vital activities — whether that’s equipment for a school, uniforms for a junior sports team, or resources for local charities. Having a place like Norwood Takeaway on board means those efforts reach more people, more easily.

It’s these small but consistent acts of support that make such a big difference. By displaying flyers, selling tickets at the counter, and encouraging locals to get involved, Norwood Takeaway helps keep the spirit of community fundraising alive. Their friendly faces and welcoming space turn a simple takeaway into a local connection point — where neighbours help neighbours and community pride is served daily, alongside the hot chips and fresh coffee.

In a world where it’s easy to stay behind screens, Norwood Takeaway reminds us that community still happens face-to-face — one conversation, one ticket, one act of kindness at a time.
