Chopping for Community, Heritage, and Connection

The Northern Tasmanian Axemen’s Association, as part of the first axemen’s association, has existed since June 1890. It traces its roots to when H. R. Nichols established the very first association in Tasmania — which went on to host the world’s first woodchopping championship in Latrobe in 1891. More than 130 years later, the Northern Tasmanian Axemen’s Association (NTAA) continues that proud legacy, keeping alive one of Tasmania’s oldest and most iconic sporting traditions.

Based around Launceston and the wider northern region, the NTAA is much more than a sporting club. It’s a vibrant community built on teamwork, inclusion, and shared heritage — where people of all ages come together to celebrate skill, strength, and camaraderie. The NTAA hosts events that unite men and women, juniors and seniors, from across the state and beyond. Woodchopping is now an international sport, and Tasmania remains proudly home to multiple world champions, many of whom began their journey right here in the North.

Beyond competition, the benefits to individuals and the wider community are immense. Members enjoy improved physical fitness, mental focus, and resilience. The supportive club atmosphere helps build confidence, belonging, and wellbeing — providing a healthy outlet that supports mental health for people of all backgrounds and ages.

Participation in woodchopping also delivers deep personal benefits. The physical challenge builds fitness, coordina  tion, and confidence, while the mental focus and discipline required help promote resilience and wellbeing. For many, it’s an outlet that improves mental health — offering belonging, routine, and a shared sense of purpose.

Through every swing of the axe, the Northern Tasmanian Axemen’s Association demonstrates how sport can unite generations, nurture healthy competition, and celebrate the best of community spirit. It stands as a reminder that when people come together around a shared tradition, they

strengthen not only their bodies but the bonds that hold communities together.

And for those who know little about woodchopping or have never seen it live, NTAA events offer an unforgettable experience. They make for the perfect weekend away or family day out — a great chance to break the routine, get the kids off their tablets, and enjoy the thrill of real-world action. The roar of the crowd, the sound of axes striking timber, and the spirit of community pride make for moments of genuine connection and joy.

The Northern Tasmanian Axemen’s Association stands as a living testament to Tasmania’s enduring spirit — uniting sport, culture, and community in one powerful swing of the axe. Please put it on your family’s calendar to come and watch.

Building Strength, Connection, and Mental Wellbeing

The Northern Tasmanian Axemen’s Association (NTAA), one of Australia’s oldest sporting organisations, has long stood for more than just athletic competition. Behind every swing of the axe lies a deep sense of purpose — connection, camaraderie, and community — all of which play a crucial role in supporting mental health and wellbeing across generations.

Woodchopping is a sport that demands both physical endurance and mental clarity. Competitors must stay focused, calm, and in control under pressure. The process of training, preparing, and competing helps participants build resilience and discipline — the same traits that are essential for maintaining strong mental health in everyday life. Through its events, mentorship, and club culture, the NTAA gives people a positive outlet to channel their energy and emotions into something constructive and rewarding.

The association fosters a strong sense of belonging. Members — from children learning the ropes to senior competitors — often describe the NTAA as an extended family. It’s a place where people look out for one another, share experiences, and offer support through life’s ups and downs. This social connection is one of the most powerful protective factors against anxiety, depression, and isolation, particularly in rural communities.

For many, involvement in the NTAA becomes a grounding routine — something to look forward to, that brings structure, purpose, and achievement. The outdoor setting, the physical nature of the sport, and the teamwork involved all combine to reduce stress and boost mental clarity. It’s no wonder that many competitors say woodchopping has helped them find balance, confidence, and renewed motivation in their personal lives.

Beyond the competitors, the community atmosphere at NTAA events brings joy to families and spectators alike. Getting outdoors, cheering on local athletes, and connecting with others provides an antidote to digital overload and everyday stress.

In every way, the Northern Tasmanian Axemen’s Association demonstrates how sport and community spirit can improve not just physical health, but the well-being of the mind, too.  You don’t have to be active in the sport to benefit, just coming along to watch gets you outdoors, and you’ll become engulfed in the positive energy!   Great for the whole family!
